There are eight Shiny Epic units, and the two obvious ways to rank them disagree. Cheeky Devil leads on total damage, Skully leads on damage per unit. The reason is a third number nobody quotes: each unit has a different placement limit, and it is sitting in the stat table if you divide one column by another. This page has the full stats and what that division tells you.
The placement limit is hidden in the stats
Divide each unit Total DPS by its DPS Max and you get a clean whole number every time: Bio 6, Cheeky Devil 5, Skully 3, and 4 for everything else. That number is how many copies of the unit you can field, because Total DPS is simply per-unit damage times the maximum you can place. It is not an estimate or a pattern we fitted - all eight Epics and all seven Shiny Rares land on exact integers, which only happens if the column was computed that way. Once you know it, the two rankings stop contradicting each other: one is asking what a full board of this unit does, the other is asking what one slot does.
Which ranking you should use depends on what is scarce
If your limit is board space - a small map, a room where only a few tiles work, Floor 4 wooden platforms above the lava - the number that matters is DPS Max, and Skully wins at 716.04 per unit, well clear of Cheeky Devil 541.8. If your limit is money and you have room to spread out, Total DPS is the right column and Cheeky Devil takes it at 2,709 against Skully 2,148. Bio is the clearest example of the trap: it ranks fifth on total damage at 1,116.72, which sounds respectable, but that figure needs all six copies on the field. Per slot it is second worst of the eight at 186.12.
Attack type decides where the damage lands
Raw damage assumes every shot connects with something worth hitting, which is where attack type comes in. Skully and Kitty use Multi Beam, which keeps damage flowing continuously and suits the long approach corridors. Bio is the only AOE Burst on the list, so its damage is spent on groups rather than single targets - the reason it underperforms against bosses and overperforms against the grouped waves that fill Floor 3 and Horror Mode. Cheeky Devil and the three other Single Shot units concentrate everything on one target, which is what you want facing a single large health bar. Frank is Single Hit with only 18 range, the shortest on the chart by a wide margin, and that range is what limits it rather than its damage.
Speed is not a tiebreaker, it is already counted
The speed column looks like it should matter, and it does - but it is already inside DPS Max, so using it again double counts. Cultist illustrates this: its speed of 4.16 is by far the highest on the chart, roughly four times the next fastest, yet its DPS Max of 355.264 sits mid-table because each hit is correspondingly small. What speed does change is behaviour rather than output. Fast attackers waste less damage on overkill, so they lose less to enemies that die mid-volley, which makes them steadier against mixed waves. Slow, heavy attackers like Robo at 0.2 speed hit hard per shot and waste more of it on small enemies.
Faction changes what these units are worth to you
The eight Epics spread across five factions: three Undead (Bio, Frank, Cultist), two Military (Robo, Ronin), one Holy (Kitty), one Paranormal (Skully) and one Demon (Cheeky Devil). Because faction coins are awarded by the majority faction on your team, the unit you pick changes what currency you earn, not just how much damage you deal. A team built around Skully earns Paranormal coins; one built around Bio, Frank and Cultist earns Undead. If you are grinding a specific faction tree, the strongest unit is not always the right one - the strongest unit in the faction you are progressing usually is.
